The Grand Isle Port Commission is pleased to announce the completion
of repairs to the West Slip of the Commercial Dock. These repairs address damage sustained
during Hurricane Ida nearly five years ago and will now allow for additional boat slips to be
leased by commercial fishing vessels.
The project included the replacement of 377 feet of vinyl sheet bulkhead, as well as upgrades to
walkways, pilings, and parking access areas. These improvements have created at least six new
boat slips, expanding capacity for the local commercial fishing fleet.
Funding for the project was made possible through a FEMA Hurricane Ida Public Assistance
Grant, the State of Louisiana Capital Outlay Program, and Jefferson Parish.
“It has been a long and challenging process since Hurricane Ida to secure sufficient funding for
this critical project,” said Weldon Danos, Port Executive Director and President of the Ports
Association of Louisiana. “We are proud to have overcome those obstacles and are pleased to see
the Port return to full operation in support of our local commercial fishing industry.”
The Grand Isle Port Commission extends its appreciation to State Senator Pat Connick and State
Representative Joe Orgeron for their support in securing supplemental state funding for the
project.
Located on Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island, the Grand Isle Port Commission (GIPC)
was created in 1996 and regulates commerce and traffic at Grand Isle’s Port. The island is a hub
for the petroleum industry, commercial fisheries, and tourism, and the Port serves to promote
safety and commerce of Grand Isle and the surrounding waters.
