The 35,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Research Facility is home to a range of projects including monitoring and research programs, and the dedicated staff works around the clock to protect the state’s diverse marine resources.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Oyster Hatchery

The Michael C. Voisin Oyster Hatchery, located adjacent to the LDWF Fisheries Research Lab facilities, is an elevated and temperature controlled hatchery that features a state-of the-art recirculating water system that will enable production of hatchery-raised larvae and spat to occur year-round. The facility was funded through the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Natural Resource Damage Assessment Early Restoration Process. While LDWF is responsible for operating and maintaining the new oyster hatchery facility, Louisiana Sea Grant provides technical direction on production and training.

Louisiana Sea Grant’s Grand Isle oyster research lab has both research and commercial-scale larval rearing capabilities. It is the largest oyster research lab along the United States’ Gulf of Mexico coast, based on larval rearing capacity.
